And the Past is in the Past, and the Future is on the Jury. Frysk is out of the game.

I had a plan with Frysk going in, I knew there was alot of story to be told with a ton of other castaways, so Frysk was someone who could stay in the background in the early Episodes as an UTR/MOR Presence. I had Kitsunie's Early Arc to give context for him and explain his initial attitudes and feelings without getting into the meat of his character, and only after Nolaa leaves did he come out as a character.

While Characterwise they are very different, I would compare Frysk to Aurora from Edge of Extinction. Someone who was meant to be a "Second Act" Type Character. Where we'd get to see his story actually begin and grow with the help of E.T. and Yessi. And as the stubborn character he was, his change wouldn't come quick and easy, which is why it was spread out. He'd have development one episode, then stick back the next before coming out again. His main story was one I thought of a while ago which was.... exploring how someone who views themselves as perfect, or at least very skilled, playing this game and having to come to grips with the realization that.... They still had alot of room to grow. That was Frysk's problem to realize and solve, which was part of the reason he stayed so long. Nobody saw him as any sort of a threat worth taking until he had that growth.

The Final thing I wanted to do, was take another stab at the Ever Popular Luke Role from SFC4, since while I was writing the season I did notice there were signs he was going to head in that direction. So I decided to capitalize on the mistakes I made before... Those being 1.) Have him actually make a move with emotions over blind loyalty, which he accomplished last Episode. 2.) Don't let him be the person who singlehandedly hands the game to the winner. Which was the reason I voted him off here. Narratively, he reached his peak in the Clarissa boot, and given there's only so many boots left, it made sense to have him leave after her since his story was done. Just as he started playing the game he should have from the beginning, but never did due to his stubbornness he still carried over from his days as Kitsunie. Some things never change. No matter how hard you try.

Overall I'm satisfied with Frysk's story. He had a slow start since the Future Tribe barely went to Tribal Council, and I needed time to flesh out characters that left early from his team like Ethan, Nolaa, and Ernest, since I knew I could save him here for later. I know some people aren't a fan of that, but if it was in character for Frysk to be Under the Radar, and it made sense in the story for him to be UTR until his story began, I stand by my decision to have him be a "Late Bloomer" as it were.

At the very least he's leaving the game a better person than he entered as.

Good.

Even though this is a little frustrating, I'm fine with this in the end. The reason this is frustrating is it seems to be how people are eliminated. Are finally having a "breakthrough", they wind up leaving. Like...Nayla has a breakthrough, and she leaves. Deimos has a breakthrough, and he quits. Atlas has a breakthrough, and he leaves. Ria has a breakthrough, and she leaves. Frysk has a breakthrough, then he leaves. I feel like this is something that can be improved on later on; just because you "complete a story element", it doesn't mean your story therefore ends and you need to leave. Like, the point of a good story or arc is how you continue onward after gaining some growth for yourself and using it going forward. Just leaving immediately after kinda ruins the purpose. You don't just fight a boss monster in a video game, and then say "Well, that's all I needed to do! All those hours of grinding has paid off! Now time to quit this game and play something else!" But, my thoughts aside, Frysk turned out to be alright in the end. Still not as great as Kitsunie in terms of impact and entertainment, but at least he learned something in the end, he got some sensed knocked into him a few times, and he got better as the season went. So I can appreciate that.

Frysk was a character I went back and forth on a lot this season. I found his attitude to change from irritating to amusing regularly, and his arc going to the last second was iffy, though it was done alright in the end. As a whole I think I like him, and I appreciate what was attempted with him though he def has problems.

Frysk was odd. I like a lot about him, and I like many of his moments, but he really doesn't fit together. I mean he did get over his past, but he never REALLY got over being a luke did he? I mean I guess he did by doing nothing and let the pat trio take power. Oh well.

Also, this is minor, I wish we saw E.T. give Shin the idol, because I swear I thought E.T. owned it. I had to go back and look just for the clarification. Nothing bad per say just a nitpick.

@guesty: It was in the comic where ET and Shin found the idol! ET specifically said that if he found the idol, he'd give it to Shin. Haven't you been paying attention?

It's what SFC is about - to recognize your mistakes, adapt to the situations, and be flexible, and I think Frysk has done that. He is heading uphill in his life even if he's voted off.

I feel like this might be in the minority with this but I enjoyed Frysk overall. Although he obviously had his problems early on in the season up until the merge I still felt like he had some good moments sprinkled in throughout the pre-merge that left me with mixed feelings. But his story and arc these last few episodes has been very enjoyable and I think it makes up for his negatives up until this moment, and maybe on a reread I'd enjoy Frysk even more knowing where his story will eventually go and how he'll develop.
In general I think I'll probably enjoy this season a lot more on a reread since I hadn't been a huge fan of it but I've really enjoyed these last few episodes and where the story feels like it's going (specifically I think I started enjoying it more after Atlas left.)

Anyways with the people left I think it's pretty obvious that it's still between Yessi or E.T.. My money would still be on Yessi getting voted out next (maybe losing a fire making challenge?) and that E.T. wins against Shin and Saggitaria since neither of them ever really saw him as a threat even though, as E.T. said himself this tribal, he's played a stellar social game and pretty good game overall. Although I like Yessi and would enjoy seeing her win she'd just be such an obvious winner and I feel like her story is more about just her growth than anything and she doesn't need to win.

I found myself enjoying Frysk more often as the season wore on. Weak initial showing, some pretty great character development. A vast and profound improvement over Kitsunie and I can't wait to see where he goes after the season.

Hey, You, Get Off of McCloud I didn’t think I’d ever come across someone that I could describe as “insulting my intelligence”, but here we are. Putting aside the fact that Frysk was exactly as much of a self-righteous circlejerk as Kitsunie was (and it’s only slightly better here since he eventually came to realize it), we already had one blind and/or dumbass follower. We didn’t need two; we didn’t really need the first one, but I digress. And as to that big move he pulled last episode, it may be in character for him, but I just hate it. The only thing it proves is that Frysk is the same smug twerp he’s always been.

Shin: “Mrs. Puff? I think I’m cheating.”

*RANKINGS*

Clarissa > Kasai > Lady Bit > Ernest > Ria > Nolaa > Nayla > Claire > Ethan > Atlas > Sprinkles > Deimos > Frysk > Kitsunie

Probably the vote that made the most sense to Shin on a personal level but that's one jury vote he definitely lost.

Frysk definitely belongs into the group of participants who benefited from the merge because he didn't have the best start. I didn't like the thought that Frysk would allow others exploiting him and was glad to see he could be more than just a grumpy soldier. It was interesting to see how his friendships developed and how he let the others take turns on cracking his hard shell. I think Frysk learned and won far more than he wants to admit in his final confessional.
